Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) RWTH Aachen University

Description

The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) is part of RWTH Aachen University and conducts comprehensive research on the entire vehicle, including its systems and their interactions. From the initial idea for innovative component and system concepts to vehicle prototypes, the institute’s employees actively design solutions for tomorrow’s mobility. In public and bilateral projects, we work together with and for manufacturers and suppliers with an automotive focus to ensure that future mobility remains safe, efficient and attractive. The basis of our intensive research work for large parts of the automotive industry and public funding bodies at EU, federal and state level is our extensive infrastructure. It ranges from driving simulators, powertrain, battery, chassis and tyre test benches and acoustic, thermodynamic and servo-hydraulic test facilities to a complete vehicle crash test facility and test tracks. In addition, the latest software and hardware equipment is available for all required simulation disciplines.

Role and Key Contribution to the Project

The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) contributes to iEXODDUS by collecting highly accurate traffic data in real-world conditions, focusing on smart roadside infrastructure sensors. This data is then transformed into a digital twin, providing a virtual representation of the traffic environment which mirrors real-life scenarios. As the Task Lead for data acquisition, ika contributes towards generating a comprehensive dataset for training deep learning perception models in challenging environments. Additionally, ika engages in traffic and V2X simulation, leveraging the digital twin to enhance the development and validation of connected and automated driving technologies.
