The ITS European Congress 2026 brought together leading experts, researchers, industry representatives, and public authorities to discuss the future of connected and automated mobility in Europe. As part of a dedicated Special Session, iEXODDUS contributed to the exchange on how Operational Design Domains (ODDs) can be further developed to support interoperable and cross-border automated driving.
The session explored the transformation of ODDs into more adaptive, resilient, and infrastructure-supported ecosystems capable of handling real-world variability, challenging operating conditions, and increasing operational complexity. Discussions focused on the importance of harmonization and interoperability to enable automated vehicles to operate seamlessly across different regions and national borders.
During the session, iEXODDUS highlighted the crucial role of road authorities and infrastructure operators in supporting automated mobility. The project demonstrated how intelligent infrastructure services can enhance vehicle ODDs by providing relevant information and support beyond the vehicle itself. Particular attention was given to the need for harmonized infrastructure services across Europe, ensuring consistency and reliability for future automated transport systems.
A key takeaway from the discussion was that the successful deployment of infrastructure-supported automation requires close collaboration between road authorities, industry partners, and research organizations. Through its work, iEXODDUS continues to contribute to the development of a connected, interoperable, and safer mobility ecosystem across Europe.
